Abstract

This study aimed to examine the structural relationships among maternal beliefs about education, maternal reasoning and intrusiveness, and young children’s mastery motivation. A total of 332 mothers of children aged 3 to 6 evaluated their beliefs about active learning and didactic instruction, their parenting behaviors (use of reasoning and intrusiveness), and their children’s mastery motivation, including cognitive/object persistence, mastery pleasure, and negative reactions to challenges. The findings revealed that maternal beliefs in active learning were positively associated with the use of reasoning, as well as children’s cognitive/object persistence and mastery pleasure. In contrast, beliefs in didactic instruction were linked to increased maternal intrusiveness and heightened negative reactions to challenges in children. Additionally, maternal beliefs in active learning influenced children’s cognitive/object persistence and mastery pleasure both directly and indirectly through maternal reasoning and intrusiveness. These beliefs also indirectly reduced children’s negative reactions to challenges by decreasing maternal intrusiveness. Conversely, maternal beliefs in didactic instruction indirectly reduced children’s cognitive/object persistence and increased negative reactions to challenges through heightened maternal intrusiveness. These findings underscore the importance of perceiving children as active learners and promoting children’s autonomy and reasoning in parenting practices to effectively foster children’s mastery motivation.
