Abstract

This study aimed to examine the current status of sexuality education in early childhood education institutions and to explore early childhood teachers’challenges and needs related to its implementation. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten early childhood teachers who were responsible for children aged 3 to 5 years in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and the collected data were analyzed using qualitative methods. The analysis yielded three key findings. First, sexuality education in early childhood settings was implemented according to annual plans based on legal requirements, while teachers also engaged in informal and spontaneous sexuality education during everyday interactions with children. Second, teachers experienced various challenges in the process of implementing sexuality education, including difficulties in addressing sensitive topics, judging developmental appropriateness across different age groups, limited availability of teaching materials and external resources, and constraints in collaborating related to collaboration with parents. Third, teachers reported a strong need for enhanced support for sexuality education, particularly the development of developmentally appropriate, age- and level-specific instructional guidelines, increased practice-oriented professional development, and stronger parent education and homeand school collaboration within institutional support systems. These findings suggest that sexuality education for young children should move beyond a focus on legal compliance toward a comprehensive and integrated support system involving teachers, parents, and governmental agencies. Such a system requires the concurrent provision of age-specific and clearly articulated educational content, the enhancement of teacher professionalism, and institutional support aimed at improving parental awareness and understanding.
