Abstract

Based on the theory that the concept of family protective factors was consisted of 4 factors(fewer stressors, adaptive appraisal, social support, and compensatory experiences), Gardner et al. (2008) developed “Inventory of Family Protective Factors (IFPF).” The primary objective of this study was to examine the construct validity and internal consistency of the Korean version of IFPF (IFPF-K). For this study, a survey utilizing a structured questionnaires was conducted from mid August to late September, 2014. The study sample was the families living in S-Gu, Seoul, Korea and data collected from a total of 470 families were analyzed. In order to determine the factor structure of IFPF-K, a series of confirmatory factor analysis were implemented. At the first stage of the analysis process, the fit indices of 1-factor and 4-factor models were compared and the results supported the latter. Since item redundancy was detected, however, a short version of IFPF-K was newly presented and the two versions of the scale were compared at the later stage of the analysis process. The short version displayed the properties similar to those of the original version in terms of the interfactor correlations and factor structure. In addition, it showed a little higher fit statistics than the original IFPF-K. Although the original version had a higher Cronbach’s α, the α of the short version was also above .90, indicating a high level of internal consistency. In discussion, some critical issues regarding the theoretical structure of IFPF-K as well as the implications and meaningfulness of the study results were described.
