Abstract

This paper has two aims: one is to present how Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, was evaluated in the satiric work Caesars written by the Roman Emperor Julian, the Apostate. The other is to elucidate one common factor between Augustus and Julian, considering its political connotations as well as its background. Firstly, in Caesars Julian did not appraise Augustus as the best one, although he regarded August as being one of the five best emperors in Roman history, acknowledging his strong points. Moreover, Julian derided Augustus for the reason that Augustus’ achievements were not based on his own competence, but mostly on good luck. Secondly, even though Julian did not sympathize with Augustus enough, their patron god was the same: they both regarded the Sun God as their patron. Thus, this paper analyzes the meaning and background of the worship of the Sun god and tries to clarify that the Sun god was deeply related to the advent of the Golden Age, of which ideas persisted and circulated all the time relating to the Roman imperial Age. The association that lies in their shared patron god being the Sun-God refers to the ambition that they would reign the Orient too, since the orient‘s traditional god was the Sun-God. In conclusion, Both of them wanted to realize the Golden Age to come in their own reign, and believed that their ambition could be achieved by the conquest of the Orient, evoking the help of the Sun-God.
