Abstract

Present study examined psychosocial characteristics of nonoffending mothers of sexually abusd girls. The sample consisted of 111 mothers of children who have been sexually abused and 323 comparison group mothers. Variables included were mothers’ childhood abuse history (e.g., total score of childhood abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, polyvictmization) and current psychosocial characteristics (e.g., depression, self-esteem, community neighborhood safety, cumulative risk factors). Specifically, this study examined (1) whether mothers of sexually abused girls were distinguishable from the comparison group on mothers’ childhood abuse history and current psychosocial characteristics, (2) whether various patterns differ in four subgroups of mothers(i.e., mother and daughter sexually abused, mother-only abused, daughter-only abused, neither mother nor daughter), and (3) whether the sexual victimization of both mother and daughter were related to mothers’ depression. Results suggest that nonoffending mothers may face considerable psychological challenges after being exposed to their children’s sexual abuse victimization, and that mothers’ own experiences of sexual violence in childhood can be an important factor in understanding these difficulties. The implications for comprehensive and effective family-centered intervention for non-understanding mothers of sexually abused girls were presented.
