Abstract

In the early December of 62 BC, the Quaestor-elect Clodius Pulcher, a young patrician, penetrated into the house of Julius Caesar, the Pontifex Maximus, where the ritual of the goddess Bona Dea were being performed by the matronae, the noble ladies of the City of Rome. It was the rule that only the females could participate in the ritual, so his offense caused a great sensation. Clodius seemed to be an arrogant young patrician who, proud of his glorious family, would have acted independently and impulsively, and, as a result, he would have many political opponents as well as many friends who paid respect to the ancient and glorious Claudian family. The so-called Bona Dea scandal provoked fierce political arguments and struggles between the conservatives, so-called optimates, who argued for the traditional authority of the Senate, and the progressives, so-called populares, who backed up the cause of popular sovereignty. During the late Roman Republic, religious questions caused many political arguments frequently and many politicians utilized religious problems to attack their political enemies. The so-called Bona Dea scandal was such an example and it exercised a great effect on the politics at the end of Roman Republic.
