Abstract
Eutropius the Roman historian in the 4th century A.D. summarized the vast Roman history to a very limited extent, and a simple summary of the incidents of Roman history from 753 B.C. to 364 A.D. was included in his writing. It is, however, not just a simple chronological summary: it also sometimes reveals specific aspects. The author Eutropius records one particular person Regulus on the 2. 25 with a special focus, after the general passage was written on 2. 21 and 2. 24 on the basis of the description of an incident. A clue for this pattern of writing can be inferred from the description by Fabricius in the first part of the same book(2.12, 2.14). Eutropius seems to have been conscious of his reader Valens(364-378). He was born in a peripheral area of the Roman Empire, and also lacked an academic education. For such a poorly learned emperor, Eutropius had to write an easy and simple history. But Eutropius did not disregard one important point: The Romans have shown devotion, loyalty, and patriotism for their nation throughout their history. If the general situation for the 4th century is considered, the writing of church history was more popular compared with that of Roman history itself. Therefore the Romans needed to educate the people through their own history in that century. The aim of the historical writing of Eutropius might be related with the historical background of his era.
