Abstract

The Roman historian in the 4th century Eutropius summarized the Roman history with 1116 years from the foundation of Rome to the reign of Jovianus. He had to write a historical work with a very concise and excessively summarized style just for his emperor Valens(364-378). This made us difficult in grasping the understanding of causal relations on the events. This paper set this problematic on the central place for the discussion, and analyzed the first two sentences of 3. 14 of his work that are seen as a very questionable passage. Eutropius left a very short and curious writing on the moving of his troops that the Carthaginian commander led from the present stationed place Capua to the capital of Roman Republic in 211 BC during the Second Punic War. According to Eutropius Hannibal was said to have accessed to a place away from 4 miles in the near of city Rome, his cavalry arrived even before the gate of the city, and he was said to have retreated ‘because of fear, to Campania as the Roman consuls came with their army. Here the author of the paper problematizes the expression of ‘because of fear’ because it is not suitable for an interpretation of causal relation of the historical events. When we observe that word in detail we find the limit and the problem of Eutropius’ writing which is typical for him, namely, ‘omission and summarization’. This is proved if his base sources, Polybius(9.1-7) and Livius(26.1-11) are reviewed comparatively. Hannibal’s strategic plan was achieved in the sudden attack toward the city Rome because the Roman troops in Capua were divided, and Hannibal’s military moving met its original aim. Then he retreated from Rome out of strategic consideration. But Eutropius ‘omitted’ the background of the strategy aiming at that city, and ‘summarized’ the cause of the retreat with the word of ‘because of fear’, therefore made the interpretation of the real cause of that military event odd and unsuitable. In conclusion the problem of 3. 14 in the historical writing of Eutropius leads to the impression that the historian delivers through the omission and summarization the actual history intentionally wrong by hiding the true cause and instead by giving the unrelevant psychological reason. Very this aspect can be the pregnant problem and the limit of Eutropius who made annalistic historical writing.
