Abstract

Despite the recent increase in women’s economic participation, the burden of childcare remains a significant factor contributing to career interruptions and exits from quality jobs. This study analyzes the impact of multiple childcare arrangements on employment status and working hours among married women with children. Using data from the 2021 National Family and Fertility Survey, logistic regression and regression analyses were conducted, distinguishing between women with preschool-aged children and those with elementary school-aged children. The results indicate that among women with preschool-aged children, the likelihood of employment significantly increases when using either public childcare alone or mixed childcare. In contrast, for women with only elementary school-aged children, employment probability rises when using private childcare alone or mixed childcare. Second, among women with elementary school-aged children, working hours significantly increase when using private or mixed childcare. Third, women with elementary school-aged children were less likely to engage in part-time work when using mixed childcare. Accordingly, this study suggests expanding access to public childcare and addressing long working-hour culture and gender-based division of labor to support women in balancing their roles at work and home.
