Abstract
This study aims to present a chance to highlight human disease from the perspective of humanities by examining epidemics historically instead of doing biologically. To achieve this I will discuss the so-called the Antonine Plague or Galen’s Plague which broke out intermittently from around A.D. 165(or 166) to A.D. 180(or 189). To clarify the relationship between epidemics and history, the background and reasons to the rise and spread of the Antonine Plague will be examined first. To conclude, the epidemic was not a unfortunate coincidence but a by-product of civilization. The growth of the Roman empire and the exchange between civilizations accompanied the growth and exchange of germs. The fact that the epidemic started in Seleucia, the center of trade and culture and that it spread along the roads and cities of the Roman empire proves this point. Many scholars who deeply believe in the power of the Antonine Plague, regardless of what it actually was, regards it as the reason of the crisis in the 3rd century, and eventually the fall of the western Roman Empire. However, as exact statics about the casualties caused by the disease does not exist, disease determinism should be avoided. It is true that such epidemics actually affected the economy and army of the Roman empire greatly. But linking all changed in the Roman economy and army in that era to the epidemics can be misleading in understanding the history of such era. In conclusion, the evidence provided by scholars who seek to link the economic changes in the last period of the pax romana to the epidemics does not seem to be enough. Also, it must be noted that there is very few proof of the damages induced by the epidemics. Also the abnormal enlistment and the establishment of the Germans within the Roman empire seem to have resulted from the military circumstance and Marcus Aurelian’s personal views, not the epidemics. It is currently very difficult to examine the economic, military effects of the Antonine Plague. Therefore views which points to the Antonine Plague as the reason of the crisis of the 3rd century or the fall of the Western Roman Empire should be withheld.
