Abstract

This paper examines the records related to the plague recorded in Ab Urbe Condita by Titus Livius and analyzes the cause and course of the epidemic in Rome, and the Romans' response to it. The main causes of the epidemic were not only the abnormal climate, but also the movement of residences, the acceptance of new religions, and wars that were caused by a large influx of foreigners. This paper examines the records of the plagues left by Livy’s historic account. Livy’s record confirmed that when Rome waged frequent wars on the Italian peninsula in the 5th century B.C., the plague struck intensively. Additionally, there were few records of the plague in the 2nd century B.C. when the wars ended. This analysis demonstrates that there is a significant correlation between plague and war. Through careful analysis of Livy's records, it is clear that the Romans suffered from plagues 14 times, once during the monarchy and 13 times during the republic. After calculating the frequency of plagues in Rome over 290 years, from the time the 2nd plague began from 493 BC to 205 BC when the 14th epidemic ended, a plague afflicted Rome every 22 years on average, and each plague lasted about 3.3 years. Roman politicians organized a committee consisting of the Senate - Consul - Decemvir and devoted their efforts to ending the plague. Livy's Ab Urbe Condita shows how Rome's religious leaders responded to a time of plague. Religious leaders tried to provide comfort and stability to the Roman citizens by holding special religious ceremonies when an ‘eccentric phenomenon’ such as a plague occurred. On the other hand, when plagues became common, the Romans left behind their Roman gods and instead turned their supplications to foreign gods such as Aesculapius and Hygieia(Ὑγιεία), who the Romans believed to help end the plague.
