Abstract

Augustus is generally remembered as the first emperor of Roman empire by a number of people. Above this, he is a 19 year old boy who is the successor of Julius Caesar, a young man who is incited through the neglect of Cicero, a victor over Antonius and Kleopatra, and a pater patriae who boasted “I found a Rome of bricks; I leave to you one of marble” on his deathbed. Ara Pacis Augustae is the fruit of Augustan propaganda that is still extant and the symbolic icon to spread the status of Augustus and the image of Pax Romana all over the Roman empire. Ara Pacis Augustae was commissioned by the roman senate on July 14, 13 B.C. to honor the return of Augustus to Rome after three years in Hispania and Gaul. The roman senate issued a decree to build Ara Pacis Augustae. The Ara Pacis was built in 13 B.C. and its ornament tried to establish the permanence and legitimacy of the principate system by implying pietas and maiestas, the virtues of Augustus. Of course, the study of the principate system has focused on the national system and the political situation until now but P. Zanker and K. Galinsky were pioneer scholars that transcended this study approach and paid attention to the visual media of the Roman empire. In particular, P. Zanker pointed out that Augustus established the new cult of princeps’ power and the new mythology of the Roman empire and stressed the importance of Augustus’ visual images. The function of Ara Pacis Augustae can be divided into two types. Firstly, it was to try to secure the supporting power of a successor to the family of Julius and to Augustus in honor of the victory over the western area. Secondly, it was to perpetuate the principate system by establishing the political mythology that the prosperity of the Roman empire was related to the family of Julius and hereditary succession. The success of the principate system based on Roman military power and Roman property and security. Ara Pacis Augustae intend to support the Julian descendant. In particular, Ara Pacis can be classified into three parts according to the time and the subject. Firstly, it is the mythological world focused on the god of Mars that is on the western frieze and the real world based on Numa Pompilius as the past. Secondly, it is the procession of senators and imperial family that is on the northern and southern frieze, which demonstrated the problem of Roman politics and society in the principate. Thirdly, it is the coming of the golden age and glory of the Roman empire as the future.
