Abstract
The various names and the religious authority of Augustus utilized to disguise his real power. The sculpture, the architecture and the city-planning performed a function as the propaganda to disseminate the golden age of Augustus. The propaganda to the divinity of Augustan family played a key role to preserve the principate system by ensuring the successor of Augustus. The Ara Pacis Augustae is the most perfect model for the construct of Augustan political mythology as the up-down media among the cultural programs of Augustus. The freeze of Romulus and Numa Pompilius reminded Romans about the Roman foundation and the Roman peace and suggested that the peace and fertility of Roman empire was able to preserve through the Julian family. In the Roman history, the war and the peace functioned as a complementary allegory. The western freeze of Ara Pacis begun with the mythology of Roman foundation which signified timely the past. The four figures were inscribed on the left freeze in the western wall of Ara Pacis. The god of Mars that was the father of Romulus and Remus was watching the scene which Romulus and Remus sucked the breast of a she-wolf. Romulus and Remus who were heroines in the mythology of Roman foundation was sucking the breast of a she-wolf in the center of Ara Pacis. Faustulus, a stepfather of twins, held a stick which represented the authority. Romulus used the violence that had to kill Remus in order to sucess the sacred plan of Roman foundation. This murder of Remus by Romulus suggested the symbolism for the tragedy of fratricidal war in the civil war of the later Roman republic. Augustus carried out the military campaign against foreign peoples, the Philific battle and the Actium battle to open a new horizon. Ultimately, the images on the left freeze in the western wall of Ara Pacis represented the military power that Augustus made much of as a prerequisite for the establishment of peace by inscribing the god of Mars and Romulus as a great general. Images on the left freeze in the western wall of Ara Pacis suggested that Aeneas conducted the sacrificial ritual of thanks or that Numa Pompilius performed the ceremony of fetialis. These opinions are the base pattern of discussions among modern scholars. The Augustan art lay stress on polysemous characteristics, and it was found in the coinage. The polysemous expression extended endlessly to the imagification of the political and social program in Augustan age and this try to pursuit the balance and equilibrium, the intention point of Principate system. These various aspects of intentional value are completed through the building of Ara Pacis Augustae. Therefore, the character of public art in Augustan age is understood to fuse among the focus significance, the meaning of author, the moral meaning, the sense of audience and reader. Also, the meaning of polysemy and pleotropic is established by forming the symmetric structure of war and peace including Roma, Venus, Ceres, Pax in the eastern freeze and Romulus, Aeneas, Numa Pompilius in the western freeze. Ultimately, Images on the left freeze in the western wall of Ara Pacis Augustae united Aeneas, Romulus, Numa Pompilius and Augustus, and suggest that the peace and fertility of Roman empire is extended to the future.
