Abstract
The material of philosophy, as Epictetus considers it, is the life of each human being. However, philosophy itself is understood as a technology or mode of life for each individual human being. In this sense philosophy is not to be identified simply as a theory. Human beings begin philosophy in order to resolve the inconsistency of beliefs about the objects toward which human motivations are oriented. Thus, philosophy is conceived as a strategy to give a constant and consistent direction to the forces of human motivation. The target of this strategy consists in; firstly, as far as the topic of natural studies is concerned, the cultivation and training of the desire to follow the cosmic Nature and to want the order of the whole of what is good; secondly, as far as ethical studies are concerned, the training of the impulse towards given social others and what are to be done for these; and thirdly, as far as that of logic is concerned, the examination and assent (or denial) of impressions stimulated and caused by the physical world, not least in order to protect these two motivations. The three topics here do not signify the three academic disciplines that are independent from each other. Every inner activity, i.e. the desire of what is good, the impulse towards others and social duties, the examination and assent (or denial) of impressions, is best conceived as a responsive and expressive occurrence at each time of a single unitary life, that is, responsive to each external event and situation in a successful way and expressive of that unity of life itself. Therefore, philosophy is to be, if necessary, divided not into its sub-disciplines such as physics and ethics and logic, but into some kinds of activity of soul. Or it is to be divided according to the motivations of soul. There is as much reason to unite philosophy as there is reason to unite life. Epictetus reinterprets or rearranges the traditional trichotomy of philosophy characterized by physics-ethics-logic in orientation to a conception of soul or, to say it more concisely, the idea of motivation.
