Abstract
Epictetus’ philosophy, as it presents itself in Diatribes and Encheiridion, can be interpreted as a kind of phenomenological philosophy of consciousness concentrated upon the problem of ‘self’, i.e. that of what the thing that makes me be myself is. Epictetus’ question is to be summarized as following: What is my identity, as distinct from that of others? How can we discover and construct our self that is guarded against every invasion from outside? Epictetus intended, first, to work out his philosophy as a program of internalization and individuation of self, and then, based on this, to show the possibility of the construction of a new self. This intention of his was inspired above all by Socrates’ teachings. The expression such as ‘what depends on us’ and ‘prohairesis’, as we often encounter it in the text, was built by him in the contextual course of developing Socrates’ teachings. Thanks to prohairesis human being can examine, interpret and agree to impressions that push on into his mind. Through a series of these inner acts he experiences his self and discovers the possibility of a new self.
