본 논문의 목적은 윤리학의 기원을 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 ‘윤리학’(倫理學)으로 번역된 영어 ‘ethics’의 어원에 주목하고자 한다. ‘ethics’는 희랍어 ‘êthikos’로 거슬러 올라가며, 이것은 명사 ‘êthos’에서 파생한 형용사이다. 사실상, 윤리학은 ‘에토스’(êthos)에 관한 철학으로 서양 철학사에 등장했다. 이와 관련해서 다음 두 가지 질문이 제기된다. 첫째, 에토스란 무엇인가? 둘째, 왜 에토스를 다루는 철학이 필요했는가? 첫 번째 질문과 관련해서 우리는 윤리학의 대상으로 지목된 에토스는 관습이나 습관이 아니라, 성격을 의미한다는 주장을 확립하길 시도할 것이다. 이런 시각에서 고대 윤리학이 성격 내지 사람됨에 관한 철학이었음이 드러날 것이다. 두 번째 질문과 관련해서 우리는 윤리학의 발단에 있어 교육이 주된 관심사였음을 주장할 것이다. 이 주장을 지지하기 위해 우리는 성격 내지 사람됨의 개념과 덕 개념을 연결시키고, 덕에 대한 논의를 희랍 고전기의 교육 이상과 방법을 둘러싼 논쟁의 맥락에서 조명할 것이다. 나아가, 우리는 윤리학이 성격에 관한 철학으로 시작했지만, 교육적 관점에서 습관과 관습의 문제를 포괄하는 철학으로 전개되었음을 보일 것이다. 마지막으로 윤리학의 기원에 대한 탐색이 덕 윤리를 둘러싼 현대 논의에 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있을지 짧게 가늠하고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the origin of ethics. To this end, I pay attention to the etymology of ‘ethics’, which is traced back to the Greek word ‘êthikos’, the adjective cognate with ‘êthos.’ In fact, ethics has appeared in the history of philosophy as a philosophy about êthos. In this regard, two questions arise: First, what is êthos? Second, why there was a need for a philosophy dealing with êthos? Concerning the first question, I attempt to establish the thesis that ‘êthos’, regarded as the object of ethics, means character, although the term can refer to customs or habits etc. From this perspective, ancient ethics emerges as a philosophy about character or personality, not as a philosophy about customs, as has been claimed. As to the second question, I claim that education was the main concern at the beginning of ethics. In support of this, I link the concept of character to the concept of virtue, and shed a light on discussions about virtue by referring to the context of the debate over the ideal and method of education in the Greek classical period. Furthermore, it is shown that ethics started as a philosophy about character, but developed as a more comprehensive discipline which studies also habits and customs from an educational perspective. Finally, I conclude by briefly assessing the bearing of the search for the origin of ethics on the contemporary discussion about what ethics is and does.
