Abstract
The purpose of this article is to attempt an academic convergence of both history and leadership disciplines. This has been done by interpreting both the public service project and the shower of exceptional presents that Octavian had carried out through Agrippa in 33 BC, from the perspective of leadership theories. This will not only expand the horizon of leadership research but also enrich the historical study of Octavian. Octavian was a typical ‘transactional leader’, utilizing the trading profit – the political support of the Roman commons, that his own projects in 33 BC would bring to him. But he wasn't just a ‘transactional leader’. He was a genius of image politics who recognized the operating principle of ‘charismatic leadership’ during a fierce competition with Marc Antony. As a charismatic leader, in other words, he was not satisfied with merely declaring himself Apollo, but carefully coordinated the contents of public service projects and gifts for the Roman citizens so that they would recognize him as Apollo. He also presented a shared vision of the ‘Recovery of the Roman Republic’, and in line with it, he entrusted his projects to aedile. These actions distinguish him from Caesar, also a typical “transactional leader,” who failed to present his own shared vision. At the same time, Octavian, observing the expected effects of ‘transactional leadership,’ did not lose cautiousness when appointing Agrippa, who was also an ex-consul, to aedile, a mid-level magistrate, to ensure that his trading profit did not go to anyone else.
