Abstract
A large number of clay tablets in the Ugaritic language were found in the ancient Ugaritic city of Ras Shamra. The most popular among them are the Baal Cycle (KTU 1.1-1.6), the Keret Epic (KTU 1.14-1.16), and the Aqhat Epic (KTU 1.17-1.19; KTU 1.21-22). The works were recorded by Ilimilku, a high priest of Ugarit. Illimilku’s works were recorded at a specific time and place by one author, providing a unique opportunity to study the author's use of literary patterns as well as social and religious perceptions. This paper studies three literary patterns related to death in the works of Illimilku. 1) The pattern of the messenger’s report of death and the response of the recipient, 2) The pattern of finding and burying the corpse, 3) The pattern of death-drought and resurrection-rain. This study of literary patterns provides an opportunity to reconstruct the stories of Illimilku’s works by postulating the contents of the unknown parts of the broken tablets. This study also suggests the possibility of Aqhat’s resurrection in the unknown part of the broken tablet of the Aqhat Epic.
