Abstract

This paper aims to reveal how Dura-Europos, a fortress-city on the borderlands between Rome and Parthia/Persia, developed and how its ‘strategic value’ changed under the dynamics and geopolitical situations of the two imperial powers. In particular, its military importance on the borderlands between Rome and Persia in the 3rd century CE has been carefully investigated. Dura-Europos was originally a fortress built around 300 BCE by Seleucus I Nicator in order to check the influence of Antigonos I Monophthalmos who was trying to expand his power in Asia Minor and Syria. While the Seleucid dynasty took control of Syria, Dura-Europos developed into a crossroad city located on the Euphrates connecting the eastern Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. After the Parthians had occupied Dura-Europos in 113 BCE, it became a border city on the western frontier of the empire. However, in the balance of power between Rome and Parthia, the city flourished as a hub connected with caravan cities such as Palmyra. In 165 CE, Dura-Europos fell under Roman rule, and then became one of the major fortress-cities of strategic importance on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire. During the first half of the 3rd century, the fortress-city’s population increased by 10,000-15,000, and the city itself was raised to the rank of Roman colonia. However, Persia overthrew Parthia in 224 CE, and then began to wage a full-scale war against Rome. Thus, Dura-Europos became a theatre of fierce battles between Rome and Persia when the Persians besieged the city. Eventually it fell to the Persians in 256 CE, and then it was destroyed while its residents were forced to leave. Sometime between the 270s and 363, the city seemed to have been completely abandoned by both Rome and Persia. A plausible reason for the desertion of Dura-Europos was that it had lost its strategic value after their main routes of attack moved from the Euphrates to the Tigris as the Romans had secured Upper Mesopotamia as the bridgehead towards the Upper Tigris.
