Abstract

This paper is focused on examining the date for the Kallias decree and the operating system of the temple treasury in the fifth century. The Kallias decree is closely connected with the concentration on the Akropolis of the treasures of the local gods of Athens and Attica, just prior to the outbreak of Peloponnesian War. The date for these inscription can be claimed on the date of 434/3 B.C. The both sides of this inscriptions are clear that its are concerned with the operating system with regard to temple treasures. The ‘Decree of Kallias’ is a decree ordering the repayment of Temple monies borrowed from Temple treasures other than Athena’s. It is clear that the purpose of the decree was safety for the treasures of Temple. It has to do with the lay-out of the Akropolis. The decree created a treasure trove on the Acropolis called Opisthodomos, so that the treasures of the other gods would not be mixed with those of Athena. Therefore Athena's treasure was placed in the space to the right of Opistomomos, and the treasures of the other gods were placed in the space to the left, so that they could be managed in different spaces. And a new Tamiai was selected to oversee the treasures of the gods. The decree provides for the establishment of a new board, and the adoption of the decree entailed a fundamental change in the system of the Athenian temple.
