Abstract
This study examines the changes in the cultural landscape of Athens through the reuse of marble sculptures after the Persian Wars. The Persian Wars were a major turning point in Athens politically, economically, and culturally, and the reuse of existing marble sculptures was inevitable during the city’s defense and reconstruction efforts following the war. This reuse of marble sculptures was a common ancient practice for efficient resource utilization, and was widely practiced in classical Athens. The reuse of ancient marble was carried out for political, economic, and aesthetic reasons, and is an important research topic, especially in terms of the durability of marble and the ability to preserve its original context to some extent after reuse. The ‘Oath of Plataea’ has been suggested as a reason for the delay in the reconstruction of the Acropolis, but the existence and actual impact of this oath are unclear. The marble sculptures discovered in the Acropolis after the Persian Wars appear to have been the result of ceremonial burials, which are interpreted as examples of the prohibition of reuse. After the war, the cultural landscape around the Acropolis was newly formed as part of efforts for defense and reconstruction. These efforts were realized through the reuse of marble sculptures, which had cultural and symbolic meanings as well as for economic reasons. The reuse of marble sculptures was an act that symbolized Athens’ intention to maintain continuity with the past, while also symbolizing a transition toward a new era. After the Persian Wars, Athens focused on defense and reconstruction, which had a major impact not only on the city’s physical structure but also on its cultural identity. The reuse of marble sculptures on the hill of the Acropolis was at the center of this change, playing a significant role in Athens’ overcoming of the scars of war and heralding a new beginning.
