본 논문은 고대 아테네에서 사제의 선발방식과 사제의 역할 그리고 사회적 기능을 고찰하는데 있다. 그리스인의 모든 활동은 신과 관련된 제례와 결부되어 있었다. 그들은 희생제를 올림으로써 신들의 호의를 얻을 수 있다고 생각하였다. 아테네 사제는 두 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있다. 하나는 초기 세습적 전통을 유지한 씨족사제로 다른 하나는 새로운 정치체제를 반영한 추첨방식인 민중사제이다. 클레이스테네스의 부족 개혁이후에도 특정제례는 여전히 특정 씨족에서 사제들을 배출하였다. 고전기 사제선발은 추첨으로 임명된 민주적 사제와 세습적 전통으로 임명된 씨족사제가 적절히 혼재되어 운영된 것이다. 고전기 시기 아테네 사제들은 국가의 통제와 권위 속에서 기능하였지만, 그들은 신과의 소통하는 자로서 종교적인 면에서 탁월한 지혜를 갖춘 자였다. 아테네 사제의 가장 핵심적이고 중심적인 요소는 제의 봉헌이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 그들은 자신들이 봉헌하는 제의의 평판에 따라 사회전반에 막강한 영향력을 행사했을 것으로 추정한다. 궁극적으로 아테네 사제선발은 그 사회의 전체적 시스템과 관련하여 작용한 것으로 설명할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper examines the selection method of priests, the role of priests, and social functions in ancient Athens. Every Greek activity was linked with the cult of some god. It was thought that the favor of the gods could be obtained by offering sacrifices. The Athenian priests can be classified into two types. One is the gentile priest who maintained the early hereditary tradition, and the other is the democratic priest, a lottery method that reflects the new political system. Even after Kleisthenes’s tribal reforms, particular ritual tasks, was to provide priests for certain clans or families. Therefore, in the classical period, democratic priesthoods appointed by lot and gentile priesthoods appointed by hereditary tradition were properly mixed. In the classical period, the Athenian priests functioned under the control and authority of the state, they were those who communicated with God and had excellent religious wisdom. The most important and central element of the Athenian priest is the dedication of the ritual. Therefore, they can exert a strong influence on society as a whole according to the reputation of the ritual they dedicate. The selection of Athenian priests needs to be understood in the whole system of the society.
