Abstract

There are many studies on Julius Caesar's The Gallic Wars, but mainly related to war, military action, Gaul and Germanic ethnography, and etc. This paper examines functional relationships between war and economy, focusing on the existence of merchants and their activities in The Gallic Wars. Caesar, who had been in great financial difficulties, boasted of incredible wealth after the Gallic wars. It must have been because of the loot and trophies such as gold and silver, taxes, tributes, and tolls acquired during the Gallic wars. The loot obtained was traded through war merchants. At that time, war merchants were not only engaged in simple trading activities, but also served as informants or envoys for Caesar and the Roman army. They were clearly tied to the Roman legion's closest interests in various ways. It may have been for this reason that Caesar, in describing the characteristics of the tribes in Gaul and Germania, associated measures of “civilization” or “humanization” or “taming” with merchant and trade activities. Numerous trophies, slaves, and taxes collected from the conquest flew into the Roman economic system mainly through the trade activities of merchants, involving complex economic effects such as the development of markets, banking and transport systems.
