Abstract
This study analyzed the sentence structures used to express arguments in persuasive essays, suggestive texts, speech texts, and discussion/debate texts to derive educational implications related to language composition in persuasive writing. For this purpose, the study examined the sentence structures associated with argument expression as realized in persuasive essays, suggestive texts, speech texts, and discussion/debate texts included in secondary school textbooks. The analysis revealed that deontic modality was predominantly employed in persuasive essays, whereas the modality of desire, frequently expressed in colloquial requests, was prominent in suggestive texts. In speech texts, expressions such as “I think that” were frequently used, whereas discussion and debate texts predominantly featured consensus-oriented expressions reflecting the interactive context of dialogue. These findings suggest that educational content on sentence composition in persuasive texts should enable learners, as autonomous “linguistic agents,” to strategically select and utilize sentences based on a sufficient understanding of the writing context for each type of persuasive text.
