Abstract

This study aimed to investigate Korean elementary school students’ experiences in school writing instruction and assessment, focusing on how these experiences relate to writing attitudes such as interest, belief, self-efficacy, and values. A nationwide survey was conducted among elementary school students, and their writing experiences were categorized into four domains: writing frequency, text type, writing tool, and feedback. The results revealed that, first, writing frequency—whether at the sentence, paragraph, or multi-paragraph levels—was significantly correlated with writing values. Second interpersonal and emotional writing was most common, while informational and persuasive writing appeared less often; correlations between text types and writing attitudes varied by genre. Third, while traditional tools such as paper and pens dominated school contexts, digital media was more frequently used in everyday contexts, and the relationship between writing tools and writing attitudes differed by context.
