Abstract
This paper examines the prophetic phenomena of the early days of ancient Israel, and the roles and social position of the pre-classical prophets from a sociological point of view. Due to the threat of the surrounding forces, the downfall of the sanctuary, Shiloh, and the social instability caused by political instability, the monarchy system was established by a charismatic leader. As a result, the priestly figures who were pushed to the social periphery began the prophetic movement. As peripheral powers, they carried out prophetic activities, acting as the pioneers of the prophetic movement in ancient Israel. In addition, the pre-classical prophets of Israel performed political and social functions, while the early prophetic figures of the Northern Ephraim tradition were political and religious leaders with social maintenance functions as the central power insociety. However, the early prophets after Samuel were pushed to the periphery of society and carried out social reformation as spokespersons of God sponsored by their support groups. In conclusion, the pre-classical prophets of Israel, as religious leaders, proclaimed the faith of Yahweh and urged the people to maintain the right relationship with God. As political leaders, they played the role of social reformers who struggled with political forces to reform society. In other words, the pre-classical prophets played a political and religious role. In these senses, they have fulfilled their mission as the transitional prophets who inherited the tradition of Moses, defended the faith of YHWH, and transmitted the holy traditions to the classical prophets who themselves represent classical prophecy as the predecessor of the religion of YHWH, Yahwism. In fact, through the pre-classical prophets, the classical prophecy of Israel begins to make its real appearance in history, and this is the significance of their roles.
