Abstract
This paper intends to define the concept and use of prophetic preaching and wants to suggest its significance as a useful model for contemporary preaching. In the First Part, I examine the book of Isaiah as a whole in order to clarify the basic nature of prophetic preaching. This study outlines the role and message of a specific Old Testament prophet. The prophet was primarily a forthteller who intended to identify and transform Israel through a message of eschatological salvation together with judgment. The message was based upon the covenant relationship between God and Israel. The prophetic message was deeply concerned with social issues, but in such a way that it was imbedded in the total theological stance of the prophet as a ‘theologian’ (God’s spokesperson). In addition, the prophet proclaimed the message of a monotheistic faith, with strong social and political implications for God’s people and for the world. The prophetic message was mainly theological, but had a holistic view of God, his people, society and the whole of the world and creation. In the Second Part, I define the concept, use and significance of prophetic preaching for today. It is defined as pastoral preaching which can and should be proclaimed by a local preacher in a local church in terms of the healing, guidance and reconciliation of a congregation. It is defined as social preaching which reflects the specific social-political contexts and current issues and attempts to nurture the church as God’s alternative prophetic community with a unique social responsibility. It is defined as theological preaching based upon the Word of God, which proclaims God’s sovereignty and uniqueness, his will and his mighty acts, and which aims at the restoration of the relationship of humanity and creation with God and with one another. It is defined as eschatological preaching which proclaims the message of eschatological salvation together with judgment in terms of a triple hermeneutics and a threefold purpose-the pastoral, the social and the theological. Finally, we suggest that prophetic preaching should be proclaimed with authority and boldness, inaninvitational and a challenging style. Finally, regarding its significance, prophetic preaching is characterized as a balanced or holistic preaching in its development, content and purpose. It can challenge the one-sided preaching which is identified as one of the problems in pulpit today. It is suggested that it can be a useful model for contemporary homiletics.
