Abstract
This study examines the tradition and key terms of magic in Greece, analyzes the text of the Athenian curse tablets from the 4th century BC, and contextualizes the content with archaeological evidence. The inscriptions on the curse tablets reveal an intention to deprive the cursed (victim) of their freedom and vitality by binding them down (to the underworld). The client of the binding curse aims to bring the victim to ‘death’ in trials, contests, love, and business. This intention is reinforced by using lead as the material for a curse tablet to emphasize the nature of the binding, fixing it again with nails, and stashing it underground, in such places as tombs, wells, and riversides. Curse tablets engraved with the victim's name were buried underground, and through this act the binding, suggesting the victim's judicial, social, affectional, and commercial ‘death’. Thus, the act of burying the curse tablet is understood as a symbolic ‘funeral’ for the victim. In ancient Athens, the 4th century BC was a time when social instability increased and individuals faced growing burden of competition. If curse tablets were a way for individuals who received unfavorable results in competition to retaliate in an informal way, curse tablets need to be seen as a way to resolve conflicts within society and contribute to the integration of the community. The Athenian Curse Tablet is significant in that it provides insight into the nature of humans and society in the 4th century BC, when anxiety about competition was intensified and envy and jealousy over results were growing.
