Abstract

This study examined the research trends of modern poetry in Korea that had been accumulated over the last ten years in terms of using methodologies based on historical research of literature, searching for new poetic theories, and finding methodologies on poetry research combined with cultural discourse research. Based on the findings regarding the research trends of modern poetry in recent years, the study proposed the three following directions for the prospect of modern poetry research in Korea: first, there should be full researches on the criticism of original texts. Complete collections of poems loyal to their original works are published including the original poetry books, but there are not enough researches on the criticism of original works and linguistic interpretations except for a few major poets. Second, it is still needed to develop methodologies to ensure the new and rich reading of poetic texts. There should be efforts to elaborate the poetic theories further by encompassing contemporary poetry, make an attempt at establishing a system of poetic theories, and make the methodologies more elaborate through the analysis of actual poems. Many more researchers need to pour their time and effort into the establishment of proper methodologies to reveal the characteristics of modern Korean poem written in Korean language. Finally, the problematic consciousness is still valid to present the analysis results of poetic texts with the external interpretations of poetic texts by using the findings of discourse research. The research of modern poetry will not be included in the research of cultural discourse easily, but researchers of modern poetry will cross the boundaries of science and move toward the research of cultural discourse in higher frequency. If there are active exchanges between researchers that take advantage of discourse research findings, being firmly rooted in the research of modern poetry, and those who cross freely between the domains in a light manner, they will open another breakthrough for the research of modern poetry. The study divided the research trends of modern poetry in recent years in three flows for convenience, but they will be able to share the problematic consciousness and contact each other in the areas of criticism of original works, search for new poetic theories, and problematic consciousness of discourse research rather than sticking to the strict boundaries among them. The tasks should be addressed of doing research on the criticism of original modern poems and establishing theories for modern poetry before fusion with other academic areas will generate significant results.
