<춘향전> 영역본 연구 - 춘향의 형상화 방식과 번역 전략을 중심으로

Abstract

This paper aims to elucidate the representation of Chunhyang in various English versions of "The Tale of Chunhyang" and to scrutinize the translation strategies employed in these editions. "The Tale of Chunhyang" have been examined in the context of translation studies so far, undergoing comprehensive evaluation and criticism. Nevertheless, the reason for revisiting these translations arises from two key questions. First, what factors led individual translators to either transform the original text of "The Tale of Chunhyang" or to translate it with fidelity? Second, how did the translators bridge the cultural and knowledge gap between the source and target audiences through their translation strategies? The paper outlines the following: Horace Newton Allen, Edward J. Urquhart, and Richard Rutt all translated "The Tale of Chunhyang" with the intention of conveying an idealized representation of Korean womanhood to the Western audience. While these translators share this common goal, their methods of character portrayal differ markedly. They selectively excise comedic and erotic elements present in the narrative, and in certain instances, portray characters divergently from the source text. Additionally, they make significant alterations to the narrative structure of the text. In contrast, in an effort to craft a more authentic depiction of Chunhyang, a translator also translates various elements embedded in the source text with high fidelity. Despite a shared intention of translation, the strategies employed by these translators exhibit notable differences. Their approaches include the use of omission, hypernyms, and supplementation when handling the distinct cultural aspects of the East. In some instances, they also employ foreignization strategies, thereby incorporating Eastern cultural elements directly into the translated text.
