Abstract
This paper aims to examine the aspects and characteristics of state examination stories in 『Leesoonrok』 and to explore the realities and cultural backgrounds of the state examination system in the late Joseon period. 『Leesoonrok』 contains numerous anecdotes in the sihwa(詩話) style, and this tendency is reflected in state examination stories through the use of gwamun(科文). Especially in these anecdotes, the detailed representation of gwamun formats in the late Joseon period vividly illustrates the scene of the state examination site at that time. Anecdotes related to provincial examinees present yusaeng(儒生) and gyosaeng(校生), criticizing the societal trend in which examinees lacked even the basic knowledge of composing poetry and prose. Furthermore, in anecdotes where passing the exam is realized through dreams, the subject of the dream—whether it is the dreamer or another person—determines whether the story reflects the popular belief in the Inevitability of passing the exam or an active pursuit of it. These narrative structures reveal varying degrees of desperation and desire for passing the exam. As a result, the state examination stories in 『Leesoonrok』 provide insight into the examination culture beyond its traditionally capital city-centered understanding, allowing for an exploration of provincial examination culture as well. Additionally, the effective use of gwamun enhances the realistic portrayal of the state examination site, while dream-related anecdotes provide insight into the societal atmosphere about passing the exam. Thus, state examination stories in 『Leesoonrok』 are significant in offering a broader understanding of the realities and social atmospheres of the state examination at that time.
