Abstract

This paper aims to examine 『Maeonghannok』 through the material aspect of the state examination. To this end, all anecdotes related to the state examination is referred as ‘the state examination stories(科擧談)’. Subsequently after classifying the stories by subject, sources of and characteristics of the state examination stories in 『Maeonghannok』 were confirmed by comparing and contrasting related various records. The characteristics of the state examination stories in 『Maeonghanrok』 are that factuality reflecting actual events and fictiveness consisting of made-up stories coexist, while factuality is more emphasized than fictiveness. In addition, more factual anecdotes reveal the author Park Yang-han's partisanship in terms of showing us his family line and figures of So-ron faction(少論系) and their stories. Furthermore, characteristics of the early and later Yadam in 『Maeonghanrok』 coexist because there is criticism based on rules and regulations of the examination. In the case of fictiveness, a solemn atmosphere is noticeable in anecdotes corresponding to the unusualness such as dreams and coincidences. Because both dreams and coincidences has inevitable and fateful aspects, it is identified that there is tendency to pursue a moral ideology in anecdotes, even though the unusualness is not without laughter or an interest at all. In addition, anecdotes emphasized with narrativity in 『Maeonghanrok』 are passed down to the later Yadam. In other words, a solemn atmosphere is predominant rather than an interest and at the same time narrativity with laughter is discovered in 『Maeonghanrok』. Therefore, the state examination stories in 『Maeonghannok』 occupy a bridge position in Yadam of the the 17th and 18th century in terms of its contents and implementation methods.
