Abstract
This study aimed to reinterpret Jukgye-sa (竹溪辭) and Dodong-gok (道東曲) by Ju Se-Boong (周世鵬) in honor of Ahn Hyang (安珦), from two perspectives: the Indigenization of Confucian ritual and music in Joseon Dynasty, and the theory of Confucian orthodoxy (道統論). While earlier research on Ju Se-Boong’s poetry, including Dodong-gok, primarily focused on the perceptions of vernacular poetry, some recent studies had begun to highlight the ritualistic functions of these songs. Building on such insights, this paper examined the performative aspects of Jukgye-sa and Dodong-gok by comparing the records found in Jukgye-ji (竹溪志) with those from national rituals of Joseon. It further analyzed documents related to Confucian rites at seowon, such as ceremonial protocols(笏記) and personal records by Yi Hwang (李滉), to explore how Toegye—who led the effort to secure state recognition for Sosu Seowon—perceived and adapted Ju Se-Boong’s commemorative project. The findings suggested that although Yi Hwang played a central role in institutionalizing the seowon, he held a critical view of Jusebung’s attempt to elevate Ahn Hyang. Nevertheless, the model of honoring specific individuals and defining Confucian orthodoxy through seowon rituals became a prototype for the memory politics of the Sarim (士林) in the late Joseon period. A re-examination of Jukgye-sa and Dodong-gok thus revealed their cultural significance within the ritual and literary culture of the time.
