Abstract
This paper examines the process and significance of the enshrinement of Donggye Jŏng-On, one of the three sages enshrined at Namgye Seowon, one of the nine Seowons inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2019. The study covers Jŏng-On's poetry and writings, the Confucian scholars' condolences for Jŏng-On, a petition by Jŏng-On's literati requesting his promotion, and records related to the establishment and operation of Namgye Seowon. In this paper, we explored Jŏng-On's life, literature, and ancestral rites process through Jŏng-On's literature, the literature of the Sarim, and the records of NamgyeSeowon. In Chapter 2, ‘The Shape of Confucianism Revealed in Donggye’s Literature,’ examined Jŏng-On’s life, which was marked by Confucianism, and confirms that his literature was the result of his belief in Confucianism. In Chapter 3, ‘The Image of Donggye in the Literature of the Sarim,’ we examined the image of Jŏng-On, depicted as ‘a local scholar, a filial son, a loyal subject, and a devout Confucian scholar,’ in the Sarim’s memorial oration mourning the death of Jŏng-On, and the Sa-rim’s wish for the immortality of his spirit. Chapter 4, ‘The process of enshrining Donggye at Namgye Seowon and its modern implications,’ discusses the process of Jŏng-On’s elevation to the position through a collective petition by the scholars of Hamyang, An-ŭm, and Gŏchang, and the modern significance of Jŏng-On’s enshrinement. The winter ancestral rites at Namgye Seowon were a self-directed cultural activity of the 16th and 17th century Sarim (literati scholars) of Hamyang, who defined themselves and their group through Confucianism. This reflects the proactive and enthusiastic approach of the Sarim in Hamyang, who used Confucianism to guide their individual lives, foster self-reflection and solidarity within the group, and actively address global changes.
