Abstract
This paper examines the anti-feminist discourse that intensified in the late 1990s and the response of feminist literature to it, focusing on Gong Ji-young’s “The Good Woman” and Jeon Kyung-rin’s “The Goat herder” and “The Spiral Stairs of the Night.” Just like the anti-feminist camp in Korea in the 2020s, the anti-feminist camp in the late 1990s adopted a strategy of blurring the concept of feminism by renaming feminism by another name and distinguishing between true feminism and misguided feminism. The anti-feminist camp formed around Yi Mun-yol in the literary field in the late 1990s carried out a backlash by labeling feminist literature that had emerged rapidly since the 1990s as “false feminism.” In addition, the discourse that understands feminism as a type of humanism reduced the issues of “women” to those subordinate to those of “humans,” and hindered the establishment of active and militant feminism. In the late 1990s, feminist literature responded to anti-feminism that sought to protect the patriarchal and heteronormative family as follows. Gong Ji-young’s “The Good Woman” presented a new type of family based on solidarity among women, instead of heteronormative family that forces care work on women. Jeon Kyung-rin’s novel staged a rebellion against motherhood, which had long been regarded as an essential and sacred attribute of women in Korean society. Such responses by feminist literature in the 1990s offers meaningful implications for the path that literature should take today in confronting ongoing anti-feminism.
