Abstract

This paper reexamines the position of Gwanseo Byeolgok(관서별곡), the first travel gask by Baek Gwang-hong(백광홍), in the history of Joseon-era poetry by exploring its specific creative background. Although there have been various studies on Gwanseo Byeolgok, interest in the work itself remains minimal, apart from its status as the first of its kind. Therefore, this paper analyzes the work by examining its creative background and Baek Gwang-hong’s perception of reality, and clarifies why he chose the kasa(가사) form to create Gwanseo Byeolgok. In 1555, when Baek Gwang-hong wrote Gwanseo Byeolgok, the Ming Dynasty was in decline due to frequent invasions, and Joseon was also fraught with anxiety amid the chaotic situation in East Asia. It was a very difficult time for Baek Gwang-hong personally, as he was appointed as a pyungsa(평사, military official) in Pyeongan-do Province amid heightened tension on the frontier, and the Eulmyo Waebyeon(을묘왜변, Japanese invasion of 1555) occurred in his hometown of Jangheung in the same year. Against this backdrop of war threats and political turmoil, the narrator’s journey in the work alternates between leisure travel and frontier inspections. Previous studies have primarily focused on the hedonistic aspect of the sections describing the pleasure-seeking journey, and have derived the work’s meaning from it. However, this hedonistic aspect can be largely understood as part of the official pleasure-seeking custom intended to comfort local magistrates at the time, which can be seen as an inheritance of the creative and recreational trends of the adjacent Korean literary genre, Gyeonggi Chega(경기체가). By interpreting the work in light of the author’s real-life situation, it becomes clear that the poetic narrator’s awareness of the threat of war is present throughout the work. In conclusion, Baek Gwang-hong created Gwanseo Byeolgok as a song, inheriting the tradition of long-form Korean poetry. The work expresses the conventional leisure and pleasure-seeking allowed to frontier literati of the time, while also revealing the author’s sense of crisis regarding the unstable situation on the frontier and his sense of responsibility as an official to stabilize the king and the public.
