Abstract
Steep aging phenomenon in Korea is expected to accelerate faster as the baby boomers enter the elderly. Various challenges may occur with aging, and one of the most serious challenges is rising medical expenses. In order to solve this problem, using digital technology is received attention, and one of the most popular technologies is a healthcare wearable device. However, the acceptance rate of wearable devices among the middle-aged, including the baby boomers, is not high. To encourage the acceptance of wearable devices of the baby boomers, it should be developed in the users’ perspective to have attributes which users need. In addition, users characteristics which may influence acceptance of wearable device should be understood. Therefore, this study aims to promote baby boomers’ adoption of healthcare wearable devices by exploring what values the baby boomers perceive about wearable devices and how perceived values and users characteristics affect wearable device adoption. Based on the literature, a total of 10 hypotheses were derived about the effects of five perceived values (usefulness, convenience, information, cost saving, and reassurance) and user characteristics on the intention to accept healthcare wearable devices. To examine the hypotheses, face-to-face interview were conducted with 300 baby boomers. The results show that usefulness, information, and cost-saving values affect the acceptance of healthcare wearable devices, but convenience and reassurance values do not. In addition, among user characteristics, innovativeness and income level were found to have a significant effect, but income level had negative effect, which reject the hypothesis. Based on the results, the implication for developing healthcare wearable devices for the baby boomers were proposed and directions for further research were presented.
