Abstract

This study aims to explore ways to enhance baby boomers' acceptance of telemedicine, which has increased interest and use in the era of COVID-19. We explored baby boomers' acceptance motivations for telemedicine based on the Uses and Gratifications theory, reflecting the characteristics that require the active participation of users and provide empowerment of healthcare for them. We conducted a face-to-face survey with 291 baby boomers who have never used telemedicine. The research model contains four motivations (usefulness, convenience, cost-saving, and reassurance) and two health-related factors (subjective health status and health self-efficacy). We analyzed the influences of these factors on the telemedicine acceptance intention. The results illustrate that baby boomers’ telemedicine acceptance intention is stronger when they perceive that it is useful for healthcare, reduces healthcare costs, and makes them feel reassurance about their health. In addition, we found that health self-efficacy positively influences telemedicine acceptance intention. These results suggest ways to increase telemedicine acceptance of baby boomers and propose implications about medical equity and efficient healthcare cost management.
