Abstract

This study adopts a qualitative research methodology to examine older adults’ actual use, purposes, attitudes, and perceptions regarding digital healthcare products and services. The research aims to specifically identify and analyze both the motivational factors that encourage the use of digital healthcare technologies and the barriers that inhibit such adoption among older adults. The collected data were analyzed using a systematic procedure based on thematic analysis. The findings are as follows. First, significant differences were observed in the ways older adults utilize digital healthcare products and services, based on gender and the presence of chronic health conditions. Second, motivations for adopting digital healthcare technologies among older adults were categorized into four main types: functional and practical, social and relational, personal and psychological, and reinforcement motivations arising from psychological changes. Specifically, sub-factors of functional and practical motivation included convenience, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and personalization. Social and relational motivation included perceived similarity, social visibility, and shared experiences. Personal and psychological motivation included a sense of achievement, self-efficacy, and emotional stability. Reinforcement motivation included feelings of satisfaction and trust. Third, barriers to the adoption of digital healthcare technologies were classified into three categories: functional and technological barriers, social and environmental constraints, and personal and psychological resistance. Sub-factors of functional and technological barriers included system complexity, lack of technological reliability, physical discomfort, and concerns about data privacy. Social and environmental constraints included financial burden, insufficient infrastructure, and limited access to information. Personal and psychological resistance included physical and cognitive limitations, reluctance to learn, resistance to change, and feelings of social isolation. This study is expected to provide meaningful implications for identifying effective strategies to support older adults in actively utilizing digital healthcare products and services, particularly in the context of increasing societal healthcare costs due to population aging and the growing importance of effective health management among older populations.
