Abstract

This paper is aimed to examine the principles of Homeric persuasion by analyzing the organizing principle of Agamemnon' embassy and Odysseus' strategy of persuasion, and Achilles' responses in the Homer's Iliad Book IX. Agamemnon's embassy consists of Odysseus, Phoenix, and Aias, but it is claimed only two people, Odysseus and Aias. I thinks Odysseus takes on the 'official' speech, and the other two people support him by 'unofficial' speech. Odysseus' strategy of persuasion is following. First, He glorified Achilles by calling the best hero, then reported Greeks were facing crisis, and their lives were at risk. Futhermore, Odysseus used the strategy to bring up pity(eleos) and fear(phobos), confessing himself to get shrouded fear of death, Second, He used the strategy to remind Achilleus of his father Peleus's advice, which refrained from being arrogant, and to turn away the divine wrath, then to engage in the war. Third, after appropriate appeal to reason and feelings of Achilles, Odysseus reported an enormous gift list of Agamemnon, and persuaded to now again go to battlefield and kill Hector to get a much greater honor. However, Achilles clearly reject the proposal of Agamemnon. First, Odysseus speech excellently by using a strategy that simultaneously appeal to Achilles' reason and sensibility, but it seems not to have been formulated on the basis of sufficient understanding to Achilles' divine anger(menis). According to Aristotle's term, he has not made more accurate diagnosis on listener' pathos. Secondly, Odysseus is only a second speaker, Agamemnon is the first speaker. Achilles said that he is hateful Agamemnon even as the gates of Hades, and to assert that he can not be persuaded in any way. Therefore, the first speaker's ethos is problematic in terms of the Aristotle's concept. In the end it seems not to have room for Odysseus' various strategies to succeed. However, for the effect of the speech of Odysseus, it is necessary to evaluate it in all speeches of Agamemnon embassy later.
