Abstract

This paper approaches heroic self and his behavior pattern in the Iliad from the viewpoint of the horizon of aidōs, i.e. shame-culture. From this approach I will criticize traditional positions of Homeric world. Points of this paper is the followings. (i) The central motive of Homeric heroes is to guard their own social self, i.e. aidōs. And the public self which Homeric heroes internalize functions as an internalized other. (ii) Aidōs responds to timē. Therefore it is reasonable that the other side of honor(timē) is shame(aidōs). Homeric timē is a symbol of the communal recognition of heroes. And from Homeric heroes’ behavior pattern, we may infer that they make efforts to harmonize their own self (good agent) with mode of their acts(good mode) and result of act(good result). (iii) Homeric aidōs appears as a humility in Iliad 24. I interprets it as an criticism of heroism, and an ontological understanding of mankind’ universal sufferings as well.
