Abstract

Beidao had to live in exile for a long period due to political reasons. His life history is more unique than any other writer for that. Beidao’s experience of wandering is closely related to the half-century history in China and also the world history, too. In terms of the subject or aesthetic aspects, analyzing Beidao’s prose precisely is helpful in examining and approaching contemporary history in China. Also, within this writing, Beidao employs his original prose style, and this unique prose creation of his is equipped with crucial value and meaning in history of literature. With that experience of wandering, Beidao could acquire his own contemplative view to the world. His consciousness of participation also came to be altered by that, and this is revealed in detail through his reflective writing. This is also like a kind of ‘ontological adventure’ - ‘transcendence’. In this process, Beidao did come and go restlessly between himself and other ‘exiles’ - others. These characteristics lead to the facilitation of ‘consciousness’, and the extension of diaspora consciousness does bring the expansion of space or time or value prospects. Through the genre of prose, Beidao reveals things more concretely in an easier way of delivery. In fact, the language Beidao uses in his prose implies political nature that is symbolic as well as aesthetic just like his poetic words. But what is distinguished from his poems is that in his prose, the language has faithful roles as a tool to reproduce his experiences more directly and concretely and express his own opinions about poetry, language, and politics clearly. Also, Beidao’s prose is deeply associated with this poetic works. Beidao often takes the titles of his poems to name his prose works. In his prose, symbols that appear often in poetry are quoted. This is related to Beidao’s poetic mood. This author will leave the tasks of research on how Beidao’s prose is associated with his poems and also on his prose language to be dealt with in follow-up research afterwards.
