Abstract

The main focus of this work is on the poetry of Bei Dao, especially on his creative work after his asylum. It closely examines how the new linguistic and cultural environment of the asylum, which is totally different from his own, has affected his literature, why and how he has maintained his passion for the Chinese language. According to Bei Dao, what determines the poet's identity is not his nationality or kinship but his language. Therefore Bei Dao has used his own mother tongue(Chinese) for poetry during his Bohemian journey in Europe and America almost 20 years. In addition, he believes that the genuine meaning of poetry is born through much despair and pain. He, therefore, has continually poured out his passion for literary work in spite of the overwhelming despair and pain of his exhausting exile because poetry is the only gateway to his redemption and instrument to maintain his identity. It requires tremendous patience to study Bei Dao's work since 1989 because of its highly abstruse implication and meaning. Thus this work has not fully dealt with all of his poetic work. Nonetheless, it helps understand Bei Dao's literary and spiritual world by analyzing and focusing on his creative work in light of his special linguistic and cultural identity as an exile.
