Abstract

This paper examines the meaning of space in Aldecoa’s short story, one of the 50th generation authors in Spain. Excluding the explanation of the traditional spatial background, We tried to understand the spatial background newly by borrowing the concepts of narratival space and narrational space. In the short “Patio de armas”, the reality that the playground has been transformed into a parade is embodied as a realistic description, and the description of the arsenal that the eye could not see was made as a fictional description. In the short “Seguir de pobres”, the village savings bank’s propaganda poster suggesting the appearance of healthy farmers and a prosperous future appears as if it were a real situation, but this is only a fictional world far from the reality of the protagonist workers. However, the description of the real space was concrete as seen in the figure of ‘El Quinto’ injured by a gust of wind. In the short “El chico de Madrid”, it was confirmed that the space where the protagonist boy mainly works is composed of narratival space depictions, and after advancing into the city of Madrid, it is composed of narrational space descriptions. In the short story “La despedida”, the space inside the train cabin and the space at the station where the train stops coexist. While the space description in the room corresponds to a photographic or cinematic scene, the space description of the station portrays a futuristic and fictional space where the old couple should be separated for the first time after marriage. In fact, feature novels and short stories published before and after the 1950s are generally within the category of neorealism, and fictional space descriptions can be seen as insignificant. However, when viewing Aldecoa’s short story with a new approach, it can be admitted that there are two spatial descriptions. Of course, I think it can be found in the works of other writers.
