Abstract

This study is an attempt to apply the ‘inner perspective description’ and ‘outer perspective description’ to the short stories of Ignacio Aldecoa and Jesús Fernández Santos in the spatial description presented by Franz Karl Stanzel. In addition, Mieke Bal’s theory of focalization was also applied to this study. Literary works after the Spanish Civil War have a strong tendency to be realistic, but not all have realistic descriptions. In the short stories mentioned in this article, not only realistic spatial descriptions, but also descriptions in which the perspective of a character or author is projected after going through a filter called an inner perspective can be seen. The spatial description of Aldecoa’s ‘Chico de Madrid’ has a striking contrasting composition between the city and the countryside on the surface, but from a narrative point of view, an inner perspective and a movement in the narrative perspective can also be seen. In Fernández Santos’s ‘Cabeza rapada’, the description from the first-person point of view is generally accepted, but it can be recognized that the narrative point of view is shifted to the author. The overall narrative form of the two authors is mainly based on fact-based outer perspective, but if you focus on the narrative point of view, you can also find inner perspective descriptions.
