Abstract

This paper aims to clarify the types and characteristics of hungarian rhymes. Hungarian language stresses the first syllable, in which the stressed syllable and the unstressed syllable is able to form a beat. Within the discipline of Hungarian poetics, the basic element of the rhyme is the ‘calling rhyme’ and the ‘answering rhyme.’ Rhymes are divded into various types according to their location, sound, or the length of syllables. The rhymes quoted in this text are mostly from Endre Ady’s poems, due to his experimental posture towards his work. He is the most important poet within Hungary’s modern, symbolism literature, who experimented poetic forms by implementing different meters and structures. Recently, his poems were released in Korean. During the translation, I had an agony where I was not able to neither remake nor recreate the formal variety and beauty of the original work. Hence, through this paper, I would like to not only show his original form of his work, which was lacking in the translated version, but also display the hungarian variety and specialities of rhymes.
