Abstract
According to Antonio Dominguez Leiva, after the last convulsions of butchers of the sénéquéen theater and the Caravaggio’s paintings, a long occultation of a century and a half removed the motif of the decapitation. However, this theme, without disappearing forever in the field of representation and imagination, reappears with the romanticism accompanied by the appearance of the guillotine which then becomes, with the beheading of the king and the queen, the symbol of the French Revolution and the Terror. The guillotine carries the revolutionary spirit : « Anyone sentenced to death shall be beheaded. »Art represents the reality of the time. The guillotine will become an obsession for romantic writers. But the representation of the guillotine is problematic, because we only see what precedes the fatal moment or after the execution. Every writer has their own way of representing the historical evenement. For example, telling the time of Madame Roland’s beheading, Saint-Marc Girardin exaggerates so much the moment of his death that his death ends up becoming something exceptional and extraorinaire. On the contrary, Victor Hugo, in Le Dernier Jour d’un condamné, gives an extended and detailed description of the execution of a condemned man. The condemned suffers long between life and death. The affair is so atrocious. In Stendhal is concerned the same theme. We note especially his originality in the treatment of the subject. In Le Rouge et le Noir, the symbol of the guillotine and the characters decapitated around Julien and Mathilde from the beginning to the end. In the century when all energy is dead, Mathilde considers the death sentence as the only value that cannot be bought, and Julien will answer. However, in the last pages of the novel, Stendhal exempts all the extension of the description of Julien’s decapition. He gives us only the result. « Everything just went, simply, appropriately, without affectation. » But by the necrophiliac kiss and the burial of the beheaded by Mathilde, the novel becomes a sublime poem.
