Abstract

This paper examined the performative language model and performative self-identity in an extension of Yi Chung-jun’s representative language model. Yi Chung-jun’s novel has focused its efforts on exploring the linguistic aspects of statements as well as the realistic aspects of statements. The opposite side of the representative language model that the internal message is transparently revealed to the outside can be called a performative model. This performative model is fixed and invariant in advance, leading to a concept of performative identity, not a given identity. Yi Chung-jun’s Flower and Snake and Flower and Sound are evaluated as works that can be interpreted very importantly in examining the aspects of the performative model and expressing its potential. Finding one’s identity without knowing it existed in advance and knowing it without anticipating it is a confusing experience on the one hand and a creative and challenging experience on the other. The ending of Flower and Sound is interpreted as acknowledging the positivity of performative identity despite uncertainty. From this performative model, the perspective on performative writing can be expanded. In a situation where the artist(writer) reveals reality as it is through the work, and it is impossible for the audience(reader) to see reality through the work, the artist explores the possibility of performative writing.
