Abstract

It is well known that Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra and Dryden’s All for Love were inspired and influenced by the story of historical figures, Antony and Cleopatra, and rewritten according to the social atmosphere of the Elizabethan and Restoration periods, respectively. Although both plays are based on the same historical characters, the playwrights choose different styles and methods for the structure, language, and interpretation of the figures in the original texts in the process of adaptation. Influenced by Plutarch’s Lives, Shakespeare describes Antony as a tragic hero, who has high intelligence, courage, and virtue, and does not avoid his responsibility for his own choices and shows self-reflective attitude while overcoming difficulties caused by his misjudgement. Meanwhile, Dryden’s Anthony, a reconstructed figure based on Shakespeare’s Antony, has courage and passion as a soldier, but maintains a spirit of noble love for Cleopatra, showing a tragic hero who conforms to the audience’s taste in the late 17th century. Dryden particularly explores new ways of expressing Anthony’s psychological states to emphasise his moral aspects. It is possible to achieve more diverse and wider understandings of the playwrights’ works by studying how the two authors set and change characters’ personalities while adapting and reconstructing the contents of the original texts, and how much they fill their imagination in their works to emphasise dramatic effects. By comparing both playwrights’ adaptations and the original texts, this article examines how each playwright attempts to describe Antony as a tragic hero, whose dramatic representation suggests the social atmospheres and conditions that each was involved in.
