발자크의 골짜기의 백합 Le Lys dans la Vallée은 ≪인간극 La Comédie Humaine≫에서 걸작 중 하나이며, 한국에서도 많이 알려져 사랑을 받는 작품이다. 이 작품은 시골의 전원 을 배경으로 펼쳐지는 목가적 전원소설이며, 플라토닉 러브를 연상시키는 지고지순한 감 성소설 또는 연애소설이다. 그런데 이 작품은 역사적 사건들이 플롯의 중요한 뼈대를 이 루고 있다. 루이 18세의 왕정복고 시대와 나폴레옹의 백일천하가 하나의 틀로 작용하며 이야기의 진행에 중요한 역할을 하며, 정치적 상황이 작중인물들의 행위와 정서에 영향을 미치기도 한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 서정적이며 아름답고 슬픈 사랑 이야기에 역사가 어 떻게 개입하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 발자크 문학에서 중요한 것은 역사가 개인에게서 어떤 반향을 낳으며, 집단의 삶이 어 떻게 변화하는지를 보는 것이다. 루이 18세가 파리로 귀환하는 역사적 사실을 아는 것도 물론 유용하겠지만, 그보다 더 주의를 기울여야 할 것은 왕정복고 시대를 맞이한 프랑스 국민과 개인이 어떻게 반응했으며 어떤 삶을 영위했는가이다. 그것이 골짜기의 백합이 지닌 주제와 기법에도 불구하고 왕정복고 시대의 역사를 추적하는 이유이다.
Abstract
Balzac’s The Lily in the Valley is considered a masterpiece in La Comédie Humaine, and it is also known and loved in Korea. Everyone agrees that this work is read as an idyllic country novel set in a rural countryside, and it is a supremely emotional novel or love story reminiscent of platonic love. However, in this work, historical events form an important frame of the plot. The restoration period of Louis XVIII and Napoleon’s ‘One Hundred Days’ as one frame and play an important role in the progress of the story, and the political situation also affects the actions and emotions of the characters. Therefore, in this article, we looked at how history intervenes in a lyrical, beautiful and sad love story. The important thing in Balzac’s literature is to see what kind of repercussions the history produces in individuals and how the lives of groups change. It would be useful to know the historical facts of Louis XVIII’s return to Paris, of course, but what deserves more attention is how the French people and individuals reacted and led their lives in the era of restoration of the monarchy. That is why, despite the theme and technique of The Lily in the Valley, we trace the history of the period of restoration of the monarchy.
